It's Shrove Tuesday, also called Pancake Day. It is celebrated all around the Christian world, one day of feast and festivity before the austerity of Lent. Lent begins tomorrow, on Ash Wednesday. Today all the eggs, flour and milk should be used to make pancakes. Tomorrow nobody should eat rich food - until Easter Day. There are competitions. Who can build the tallest pile of pancakes or who can run fastest while tossing a pancake? In New Orleans there isn't a typical "Mardi Gras" (Fatty Tuesday) this year. The bars are closed, processions are prohibited, there are no crowds in the streets. In the past there were games of hurling with a silver ball. And there was permission to collect shellfish from the foreshore, to go trigging.
