There is a line in the miracle play Life of St Meriadoc, "I have another castle called Tintagel". Tintagel is very old. It was a stronghold of rulers of Cornwall for several centuries. Pottery fragments showed signs of ancient luxury. In legend it was the birthplace of King Arthur of Cornwall. In the thirteenth century, Richard, Earl of Cornwall (rich and ambitious), built a castle there. Now it is a ruin, half on the mainland and half on an island. Today it is in the news. A new footbridge was a contender for an architectural prize. It did not win. Many people in Cornwall do not like the bridge. Is it too modern?
